Moormur sent over an e-mail with some details on a couple of happenings at LOTROCast.

First of all, LOTROCast is having a contest of its own. From Moormur:

We’ve teamed up with Turbine to offer two winners a key each to Mirkwood (if they haven’t upgradedyet) and a guest spot on a future LOTROCast episode. The contest is a screenshot contest with two categories; one category is based on locations and one is based on characters. More info here: http://lotrocast.blogspot.com/2009/12/wanna-win-siege-of-mirkwood.html.

That’s a pretty nice complement to ours, which is offering the Adventurer’s Pack. Interestingly, both of ours are screenshot contests too haha. Would be fun if you won both, huh?

Even cooler (in my opinion), is that LOTROCast  will be interviewing Turbine’s Orion next week and are welcome to any questions readers would like to try and have answered. You can read more details here: http://lotrocast.blogspot.com/2009/12/lotrocast-to-interview-orion.html.

That’s pretty cool. Orion is a nice guy and has done a great job with some of the area revamps. I bet there will be some good questions and responses.

LOTRO_Adventuerer's-Pack-Logo-(2)

Turbine and Sapience were nice enough to offer some contest prizes to some LOTRO blogs, including MMeOw. Thanks to them for the opportunity!

We’ve had contests in the past, but they’ve been randomized. This time around, I thought we’d try something different. That’s why we’re holding the LOTRO Screenshot Contest.

Entering is simple: Take a screenshot in LOTRO and e-mail it to us as an attachment. Consider your composition and what’s in the frame. You can use F12 to hide UI elements and N to hide floating names if you so desire. Images will not be judged based upon compression quality, so it will not matter whether you take a shot in LOTRO itself or in FRAPS. Resolution will not be factored in either, although send a thumbnail!

All entries must be sent in by noon CST on December 31. Then the MMeOw staff will pick 3 favorites. Each will be awarded a digital code for the Adventurer’s Pack. This code unlocks shared storage and two extra character slots for your account.

We will also pick several other “honorary mentions”. Visitors can then vote on their favorite through a poll that will conclude on January 8th (it will start by the 4th or earlier — exact details will be posted when the time comes). The two honorary mentions with the most votes will also be given codes for the Adventurer’s Pack.

Let me know if you have any questions and good luck!

Update: I’ve gotten several e-mails already and one had a good question. You can submit as many screenshots as you like, but only one will be chosen per person.

Rune-keeper Rumination: The Return and My Love of Lightning

Rune-keeper Rumination has been out of commission for a while. Previously I wrote about my experiences playing as a Dwarf Rune-keeper named Risalin. Now I play as Eluveril, an Elf Rune-keeper. In addition to the race and gender change, I’m also on a new server. You can find me on Brandywine now.

Taking on a troll during a Skirmish.

Taking on a troll during a Skirmish.

Eluveril recently passed Risalin in level and is currently in the high 40s. This has meant some new skills compared to Risalin, which has been great. I really love the class. It was fun when it was first introduced, but direct and indirect (specifically the combat change recently, which has sped things up for her) patches have made a greater difference.

It also means I’ve been working on my Level 45 class quests, none of which I have actually managed to finish yet. As with every class, you’re stuck collecting some relatively hard to find materials for new weapons and armour. I was a little disappointed that, at least at this point, the weapon you receive is frost-based and not lightning-based.

I’m a big fan of the lightning based rune-stones in the game.  While frost and firebased attacks include more debuffs, lightning skills are instantaneous, which is a plus. Any enhancements a lightning-based rune-stone could offer are helpful in this case. In addition to this, a few Rune-keeper skills change based upon your currently equipped rune-stone.

This actually winds up making the Rune-keeper a somewhat effective crowd-controller on a small basis. No one is going to claim you’ll be able to match a Lore–master in this regard, but in smaller battles (and particularly on a solo-scale), it can be a lifesaver.

Too Late for New Players?

Goldenstar has a really great post on the really, really great A Casual Stroll to Mordor. It discusses a recent forum topic that asks whether or not it’s too late to start playing LOTRO. The original forum goer was worried that everyone was at the so-called “end game” and that the earlier levels were devoid of life.

Goldenstar lists some solid points in response. Among them is a simple point that I think many people ignore: “There are times for you to be proactive at finding others.” I’m going to ignore the numbers question for the most part and instead talk from a different, although I feel related, angle.

This might seem overly obvious, but my experience with MMORPGs is that many players are not prone to social interaction despite the social nature of the genre. There’s a difference between typing things in the chat and making a real effort, much like there’s a difference between being a wallflower at a party compared to trying to actually interact with people. You’re not going to get to dance much. Hell, you might never dance at all.

My apologies for the lack of updates. Sometimes the energy you want to use for things such as MMeOw isn’t there. I suppose that’s the downside to a “fan site”, huh? In any event, let’s get back to it.
