Siege of Mirkwood has been out for a while now and I’m interested in reading people’s opinions on it. The introduction of skirmishes was obviously a big deal, not to mention the addition of southern Mirkwood and all that came along with it.

Prior to its launch, I read comments around the Internet on both ends of the spectrum. One that caught my attention remarked that Turbine would regret releasing this “mini-expansion” and that in the coming months Turbine would be hearing what a bad idea it was. I’ve not really seen that happen yet, but I suppose everyone might feel differently.

Personally, I’ve not had a ton of time for anything in the game, which makes me a sad panda. I have done several skirmishes though, which I thought were a blast. Has anyone had their fill of them? I suppose at some point anything can get a bit played out.

Did it live up to your expectations? Do you love/hate skirmishes? Have you enjoyed the new areas and raids? Are there things you’re hoping for in the next book update?

Volume 2 Book 9: Siege of Mirkwood, Patch 1 is up on Bullroarer for testing. For some reason it feels as though there’s been a longer gap between the release and Patch 1 than usual, but maybe things are just dragging for me. You can read the full notes on the official forums: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=312145

As usual there are issues floating around that aren’t addressed by this patch, but we’ll have to hope they’re addressed in the future. I know there are several camps of people who are unhappy with some of the current legacy options. Managing that well seems like a nightmare, I don’t envy the people working on it.

Additionally, there’s a change to shared storage that is worth explicitly noting:

Quest items are no longer allowed in shared storage. Quest items that were stranded in Shared Storage are destroyed the first time you login a player on the account. Players who have the related quest underway will need to cancel and re-acquire the quest to receive a new quest item.

I was under the impression quest items couldn’t be placed in shared storage, but if you happened to do this, be sure to restart your quests. It’s an annoyance, but hopefully not a major one for most people. I am under the impression that if you remove them before the patch you should be safe, so give that a shot!

Do You Have A Library Card?

While spending time in Middle Earth, you may notice that there are a lot of libraries.

From the small, cozy library in Bree, to the large, well-stocked cache of tomes in Rivendell, you are never wanting for reading material for whatever down time you may have. However, there is a problem once you start venturing out from the friendly confines of the keeps and towns.

It seems that a large number of these libraries are abandoned and have become home to foul creatures such as orcs, rats and fire grims. Not to mention cranky dwarves.

One day while trying desperately to find a book, a special glowing shelf or magical list of items, it occurred to me, why didn’t Elrond or Gandalf just create a council of Librarians? I mean, we all get the title of “Librarian” after defeating mobs in Tham Mirdain, so if we can run off and save these places, why can’t others protect them from the start?

If the Elves or Men had just installed some stern, purse-lipped, shushing librarians, I would dare say things would have turned out a bit differently.

Just imagine…an orc, wielding whatever piece of metal he found on the side of the road, comes loping in, would be stopped by the Head Librarian and asked “Do you have your library card?”

The Orc, taken aback by someone addressing him without the use of a staff, sword, musical instrument or shiny rock, would be at a loss. He would have no choice but to leave the library or stand there and fill out the card with his absurdly long name (assuming he can write), bring a utility bill proving he resides in that county and then wait 14 business days before he attempts his pillaging again.

Problem solved.

While there are always people who name their characters something goofy like “bladeofdeath”, a lot of LOTRO players seem to like to name their characters something a bit more fitting. Unfortunately, the game’s been out for so long that many of the more obvious names are taken, including any real variation of the suggestions Turbine offers when you make a new character.

To help you out, I’ve put together a list of name generators and related tools. I won’t pretend to know which ones are more true to the lore than others, but I think these can get your thoughts going. Read the rest of this entry »

Hey everyone. Our contest wrapped up today with just under 90 votes. Our winners are Justin and Liam. I will be e-mailing both of you the codes for your Adventurer’s Packs soon.

As promised, I also have an additional prize for a random contest participant that didn’t win an Adventurer’s Pack. That person is Chad, who coincidentally would have been in third place for our voting. Things work out in mysterious ways.

Chad will be e-mailed a code for 60 days of playtime in LOTRO.

Thanks to everyone for entering!
