Siege of Mirkwood has been out for a while now and I’m interested in reading people’s opinions on it. The introduction of skirmishes was obviously a big deal, not to mention the addition of southern Mirkwood and all that came along with it.
Prior to its launch, I read comments around the Internet on both ends of the spectrum. One that caught my attention remarked that Turbine would regret releasing this “mini-expansion” and that in the coming months Turbine would be hearing what a bad idea it was. I’ve not really seen that happen yet, but I suppose everyone might feel differently.
Personally, I’ve not had a ton of time for anything in the game, which makes me a sad panda. I have done several skirmishes though, which I thought were a blast. Has anyone had their fill of them? I suppose at some point anything can get a bit played out.
Did it live up to your expectations? Do you love/hate skirmishes? Have you enjoyed the new areas and raids? Are there things you’re hoping for in the next book update?

I have gotten 38 levels across my 7 characters in skirmishes, and I still have yet to tire of them.
Yes, they are somewhat grindy, but having so many to choose from and each of them being slightly different makes it a much better option than questing for me.
I have to really appreciate skirmishes. Partly because I play mostly tanks, and get crushed frequently in skirmishes when grouping with matching repair bills. Solo skirmishing I rarely have trouble with, but is not as fun as grouping.
I think it is telling that everyone talks about skirmishes and legendary weapon changes, but what about Mirkwood itself? Doesn’t seem to be mentioned for good or ill much.
I can’t speak for others, but I personally do not have a character high enough to do Mirkwood… I think Skirmishes get a lot of discussion because more people can access them far earlier in the game.
That is a good point, Tony. Probably just alot more accessible, plus it is a new shiny bit of unique game design.
I’m very impressed with it for what it is — high quality additional content, along with the potentially game-changing Skirmish feature.
I’m also concerned with it for what it is not — a full-sized expansion with plenty of content options to hold players over for months to follow. In some ways, Mirkwood’s place in LOTRO history may be defined by what comes after it (and how soon).
In theory, volume 3 should be out next month but since there’s been zero press about it I’m not confident it will hit on-time.
Apropos Mirkwood, Redhead and Hobbit both find it to be Lothlorien and Moria combined: dreary dungeons under the trees. We look forward to Rohan and the open sky.
