Eluveril has spent a lot of time in Eregion lately, helping out her fellow Elves against the pressing threat. She’s taken out her share of half-orcs, wolves and wargs, that’s for sure. Only just today did she make it to Echad Mirobel, which took a bit longer than planned.

Today also marked the day that she ventured into the area surrounding Moria. After helping the dwarves out with various chores, she was regaled with the story of Durin’s Bane. I love when the game makes use of instances for storytelling purposes. I’m really excited about the possibilities of this when The Hobbit film starts picking up more steam. Imagine playing Bilbo when the dwarves stop into his home unexpectedly or when he first faces Smaug. Sweet.

The story of the Fall of Moria.

The story of the Fall of Moria.

It’s been a long time since I’ve had a character set foot in Moria. My original main, a human Champion, did so way back during the original launch of Mines of Moria. Of course, when you first arrive on the scene you’re so very close, but still a bit too far. Eluveril found that her powers were no match for the Watcher in the Water, but after deciding on a legendary Frost rune-stone, quenching its first with the blood of my enemies and reforging … she was all set. The Watcher ran away to fight another day.

The calm water masks the terror that dwells in the depths.

Entering Moria is still a bit of an experience. It’s a semi-big deal in the books (although it takes up a relatively small portion of them) and an exciting scene in the film, but it’s never really been imagined and realized to the extent it is here. I imagine it’s both exciting and depressing for the dwarves down there; they finally get to see the legendary halls, but they’re certainly not up to their former glory. It doesn’t help that there’s goblins and all sorts of oddities wandering around or that it’s dark, massive and labyrinthine.

One of Moria's many landmarks.

Eluveril didn’t make it too far yet, but I imagine more of her adventures beneath the surface will wind up here.

Looking at this and reading about it brings back some memories. Stepped away from the game for about 6 months but starting to play again and looking forward to seeing this again.

Speaking of coming back, my old friends seem to be no longer playing and looking for some new people to socialize with, is Cor Pethroni accepting recruits?
