Every day this site gets a good amount searches related to buying gold in LOTRO. For those of you trying to find that information, my main piece of advice is simple: don’t do it.

No gold seller is reputable in the sense that they’re “OK” to use. Even if they do their services properly, buying gold is against the terms of service you agree to every time you play the game. Losing your account (and, essentially, the money you’ve invested into it so far) is not worthwhile. Additionally, other services (such as power leveling) require these places to log into and play your account … I don’t know how anyone can feel comfortable with that, especially given recent warnings about accounts being hijacked in LOTRO.

Beyond all of the account concerns, it really only just does you, the player, a disservice. In the long run, it’s not that hard to make money in Middle Earth. This is particularly true in the later stretches of the game, in areas such as Moria. You can save even more by joining a kinship and sharing what you don’t need. There’s always someone else out there who wants your copper, yet doesn’t need the silver you use. Hell, sometimes people are nice enough to donate you the money for that horse you’ve been desperate for.

I realize a lot of people know this, but there seems to be a lot of people who don’t. I know new MMORPG players, particularly, seem to not understand the repercussions. To me it’s as silly as paying for cheat codes. Enjoy the game and let these gold sellers find something else to do. Maybe those of you looking for this will stumble upon this post and reconsider your situation.

Kudos! I never understood the idea of buying gold or power leveling. I equate it to setting up a Monopoly board, then paying someone else to play it for you. Just makes no sense. Even buying gold — same idea — like going over to the box for the Life game and taking the money out of it & putting it in your stack. Throws off gameplay. Not that there’s a “winning” in MMORPGs, which makes it even dumber. You don’t really gain anything. Sure you can afford some of the nicer stuff, but everyone can play and earn that stuff. It just makes all the prices skyrocket, because of the few idiots who were willing to spend 150 gold on something because they bought the gold. See, I was in beta…before the economy got screwed by gold sellers/buyers. Back then, all the prices were balanced, everyone was able to earn or purchas things. Crafting mattered, because prices weren’t all jacked to craziness. For a few glorious months, it felt like we were moving around a virtual world with a real economy. Now, it’s just like people are selling Big Macs for $350 dollars. Just stupid. Won’t ever understand it. Anyone who does buy gold or use powerleveling services, whether for this or some other game, please contact me and explain it to me in a way I can understand. Because I just can’t wrap my head around why anyone would. Thanks for bringing this up Tony. Maybe some readers will shed some light on it.

Grouping all people who are willing to pay a great deal of money for something only makes you look like a bigot ;-) .
I know plenty of people who have hundreds of gold legitimately because they realize they should be out there grinding their gold instead of complaining about gold buying.
