I was surprised to see a new Developer Diary today announcing an updated main menu system for LotRO. This will roll out with the Book 9 updates.
As you can see in the shot above, items are nested in ways that make sense. The previous main menu system (which was just a handful of icons that opened up important windows) is now being renamed the System Menu. What’s really cool is that System Menu items can be customized. If you don’t want an icon for the Crafting Panel, then just replace it.
Even cooler (at least to me) is that you can also customize the inventory icons on the right-hand side. I never had a need for five separate bag icons, so this is a great option. Being able to replace that with a singular “Inventory” button and some other useful quick links will be very useful.
I’m very happy to see this.

No, I think it’s awesome that you can customize the buttons too. Unfortunately I think this is going to break a lot of the UI’s that are out. The ones that I use are outdated and probably will go kaput.
I’ve honestly had a lot of trouble getting them to look right as it is… it seems like very few have been updated recently. It’s a lot of work to do a UI on there.
If only they could streamline the menu in WoW. It’s been the same micro-buttons for 5 years now.
I think it’s great too! I had read they would be customizable in the beta patch notes, but I hadn’t figured out how to change them until now! (Under UI settings in interface options).
Oh and Bronte, sorry, but in WoW it hasn’t been the same. They changed them to add the LFG button a couple years ago, remember?
