  1. Tur­bine did NOT say that the pop­u­la­tion is grow­ing. By pref­ac­ing the com­ment with “If any­thing…”, they leave the door open for the pop­u­la­tion to be essen­tially con­stant (which is the most obvi­ous way to inter­pret the state­ment). If you asked them “Is LOTRO Grow­ing?”, the answer would be “we don’t com­ment on pop­u­la­tion num­bers”. That pol­icy does not pre­clude them from mak­ing vague stat­ments and allow­ing every news site and blog to print a head­line that says that the game is growing.

    (Am I still irri­tated about the time that they told some Boston Globe reporter how many char­ac­ters had been cre­ated and he pro­ceeded to write as if that num­ber was a sub­scriber count, with no cor­rec­tion from Tur­bine due to their con­ve­nient no-comment pol­icy? Perhaps.)

    Quib­ble with Turbine’s PR dept aside, I think the advice to join a kin­ship is a very good idea, even for pure solo play­ers. I have never grouped once with mem­bers of my EQ2 guild, but I’m glad to have a chan­nel of peo­ple to chat with regard­less. I will def­i­nitely make a point of going LFK when­ever I get around to revis­it­ing LOTRO.
