LotRO hitting consoles is a rumor that just won’t die. I suppose the natural assumption is that this means it’s likely true. Gamedaily has information on a survey with questions that are themed around a Xbox 360 variation of Lord of the Rings Online. Questions from the survey discuss a $12.99 monthly subscription fee as well as microtransactions.
These questions and the game itself are all hypothetical. I’ve taken enough of these surveys to realize that most of the time, nothing within the survey winds up being 100% accurate. It’s generally just a way to phrase things that sound interesting to the person taking the survey, while still simultaneously finding out about their general interests.
Still, Turbine is obviously working on something and at this point I would be surprised if it wasn’t LotRO related. Even if LotRO appeared on the Xbox 360 in an interesting way and even if it was a VERY different game, I’m definitely not interested in paying any subscription fees.
I suppose we’ll see what happens. E3 isn’t far away.
Update: I think some people have taken my thoughts on this the wrong way and I just want to be clear: this post was never taking this survey as 100% factual. I apologize to those who misunderstood my intentions. I was aware of Turbine’s general “this is a survey, don’t think so much!” response to GameDaily’s post and thought I had taken a similar side. I certainly meant to, at least. I guess some things get lost in translation!
It does, however, follow other rumors and, as I said, adds “fodder” to the argument. Fodder, to me, is very different from some sort of official documented confirmation. If this was the only thing that ever popped up about the title, I think the flow of the posts about this online would be different.
I probably should be more clear in the sense that I would be surprised if this wasn’t Lord of the Rings related, more so than some exact port of LotRO. Either way, both would obviously be online because that’s simply what Turbine does. Thus I suppose both could use the title of LotRO in the way that FFXI and FFXII both use Final Fantasy despite one being a MMORPG and the other being the complete opposite.
Will their eventual console game be some variation of LotRO? I don’t know, but I also don’t agree with the idea that a PC MMORPG could not be adapted to fit a console. The first thing you have to throw out the window is that they’ll both play the same or even use similar UIs. I think from either side of the argument, you’re stuck forming conclusions. Regardless of that, we see that every day with MMORPGs: “what will happen to my class if this nerf I’m assuming will be coming down the line happens!?”, for example.
Regardless of the outcome, I still feel it’s worth responding to hypothetical situations that are presented through indirectly official channels. I don’t see the harm in that, personally, but what can you do? haha
In any event, like I said earlier, we’ll see what happens. It’s certainly an interesting situation.

Console MMO’s are a joke. I wish this would just die

[…] Hall of Justice — it’s the rumor light! Doing what we do best, eager fingers start jamming keyboards in an eager attempt to be at least the 100th person to talk about this subject, nevermind how silly […]

I certainly won’t be playing LOTRO on anything but a PC, but plenty of people who don’t currently play the game would be interested in this. In my book, anything which creates interest in a Turbine developed Lord of the Rings MMO is a good thing, as it means more money and therefore more content for the PC version.
For the record, I would actually consider micro-transactions, even though I’m a lifetime subscriber. As long as I was given more options rather than having to pay for something I can already do, then I might be tempted.

I read this on Massively, and it is a bit misleading. It’s not actually LOTRO but a new multiplayer game based on the Lord of the Rings IP. Further investigation reveals some marketing bumph about being able to play as either a ‘hero’ or a member of Saurons minions, NOT monster play.
Sounds interesting, I guess
