Tip Time: Personal Lights

LotRO has a very useful ability that allows you to turn on a personal light for your character. In the past, this ability has been great for caves and night time questing, but it’s rarely been essential. Now with Mines of Moria, it has really become a necessity. As you can imagine, some areas down there can be really, really dark.

The light has three cycles: off, dull and bright. You can cycle through all three by pressing Alt + F10. Be aware that sometimes the change isn’t instantaneous, so give it a second to apply. Personal lights are just that: personal. No one else can see your light, so each player will have to enable or disable it for themselves.

Keep in mind that the light is not always visible. In towns, for example, it doesn’t appear to work. However, it should work just fine in any other low lighting situation. It can really be a lifesaver in Moria. Being able to see the ground beneath you can help you avoid running into a cliff.

Obviously you can also just jam up the brightness, contrast and gamma, but it can give a washed out look and can harm your monitor in extreme situations. I’d recommend adjusting those settings to a comfortable level (maybe in a brightly lit area of the game) and then using the personal light when necessary. Using it is certainly a bit more immersive too.
